Configuring conveyor flow rate is not that difficult. The first thing to do is figure out how many boxes per minute must go through the system. This variable will determine what type of equipment is required. Sorting rates under 40 per minute typically don’t require and special designs.
Figuring out box size is the next step in setting a conveyor flow rate. Think of a conveyor sorting 6 in. long boxes at 50 per minute running at 100 FPM if the box size is changed to 12 in. long the speed must be increased to 200 FPM in order to handle the same number of boxes and keep the same number of box gap. Sometimes the limiting factor on a sorting conveyor will be the diverter itself. If a diverter is pushed past its limit there will not be a safety factor to compensate for the irregularities in the flow rate or diverter cycle time.
